Environmental Microbiology

Singleton Lab

Activities of Assistant Professor Caitlin Margaret Singleton research group

The Singleton group interests centre on the relationship of bacteria and archaea to the natural environment, and ways microorganisms are affected by or can help mitigate human impact. The primary focuses are on the microbes and viruses involved in biogeochemical cycling, such as carbon cycling (e.g. methanotrophs and methanogens) and nitrogen cycling (e.g. nitrifiers and denitrifiers), and how they contribute to greenhouse gas uptake and release in natural and engineered systems. The overall goal is to generate and use the knowledge of these organisms to solve environmental problems related to carbon footprints, green energy and climate change, and to help facilitate ecosystem restoration efforts
